All right, chairs. For Millennia all we've used chairs for is sitting on. But that is simply because their shape lends itself to such a function. Originally, chairs were invented by neolithic man to keep lions at bay.

Chairs are in fact the only thing that lions are scared of, as anyone who's visited a circus knows. In many respects, chairs are the natural predators of lions. That's why you never see lions in Ikea. Of course it's not all furniture they're scared of, they love wardrobes, often at the back.
